Born in Nancy, France, in February 1956, CharlÉlie Couture is a french/american musician and multi-disciplinary artist, who has recorded over 25 albums and 17 film soundtracks, and has held a number of exhibitions of photographs and paintings. He has also worked as a poster designer, and has published about 15 books of reflections, drawings and photographs. He was signed by Chris Blackwell to Island Records, thereby becoming the label’s first French artist. He recorded the album « Poèmes Rock » in New York in 1981 and had a huge hit single in France with the track « Comme un Avion Sans Aile ».
Despite the success of his poetic-rock-blues music albums, he has never stopped pursuing his exploration in painting, sculpture and photography. The New Yorker – he had his own Art Gallery in NYC for 15 years – from Nancy, rock poet and musical painter has often built bridges between French and American culture. As he explains, “I was raised in an almost bilingual environment: my mother taught French in the USA and I talked to her in English in the kitchen. In a way, it’s my native language”.
To record his latest and twentieth album « Lafayette » in 2016 (Universal), CharlÉlie Couture went to the heart of the Louisiana bayou. The raw, festive album wonderfully sums up the essence of the music he has been making for nearly four decades: an intense, profound, hot, sultry blues midway between mist and moonlight. An amazing combination between the tradition of french chanson, and the spirit of american blues, folk and rock culture. An ideal occasion to let the good times roll! … Or “Laissez le bon temps rouler” the french way!
